This was 40+ years ago! My point is much of the tones you're hearing are technique, mods and pedals used with those amps. My 1971 Super Lead was literally modded in the 70's for a local touring coverband guitarist to tie together the inputs, add gain at each input and to allow for 4 4x12's to be used, and had a 25 watt, 50 watt, 100 watt setting. Many of the ones your rock idols use(d) are modded also. As for Marshalls and those tones, yep most people on this thread referenced 'boosts /overdrives' and yep that's a fact, and also I have over 10 Marshalls and they're all modded. He's not even remotely 1 of my favorite guitarists, but OP if you're referencing his tone/gain,etc using that gear, much of that powerful tone is in his technique for sure. With 30 watts of power channeled from an all-tube signal path, you'll command the legendary guitar tones of '60s rock legends. There are different Plexi models such as the JTM45, the Bluesbreaker combo version, and. It’s an iconic look that has adorned stages all over the world, from the birth of what we now refer to as classic rock, right up until the modern day. His squeals/pinch harmonics, etc are effortless due to his technique. Reissue of the Iconic JTM45 'Plexi' The Marshall JTM45 tube amplifier head is widely considered to be the definitive '60s Marshall. The term 'Plexi' refers to Marshall amps made in the '60s and '70s, due to their Plexiglass front panel. He does licks extremely repetitively, with the guitar behind his neck, where my fingers won't even reach those frets in normal position and my right arm could never pick as fast as him. I've seen Zakk in concert quite a few times with the Generation Axe shows, etc and he's a massive muscular guitarist with all kinds of arm /hand strength. So this is kinda what I was going to say too. I even bought a 4x12 EV cab and it just got cleaner. And yes, I crank them, attenuate them, iso cab record them and still dont get ZW sounds. Yes the JVM and the 2000s DSL on the red channel gets heavier but thats what I would expect from a stock 800 when listening to youtube clips. Add the hot mod and you are closer but at whitesnake at best. My 84' 2203 stock sounds good but nowhere heavy. But I hear youtube channels of guys getting great tones out of an 800 or plexi, so how? Am I missing something? I thought Id be getting No More Tears sounds out of it and I got Angus. Maybe it's because Marshall has been building these amps for a long time (and everybody else builds a version or clone) they're not 'New and Hot' like the new 20 watters. And it has a gradual onset of breakup so you can pick your own type of base tone. You think a plexi is the key to all Marshall tones and you buy one and its just a loud PA or ad/dc at best. The clean tone of the amp sounds wonderful all by itself. I feel that the internet misleads people on that sound. Thats close but I hear guys doing it without that. The closest I got to getting an 800 to sound like I want is adding the soldano hot mod. What I dont understand is how people get plexis or even 800s to sound so big and mean. I owned 800, 900, 2000, jvm, friedmans, bray, mohave, modded marshalls, yjm, zw 2203, and more that I lost track of. I have owned many amps chasing the marshall sound but only to be let down every single time. But I am talking about sitting in front of an amp and playing. I have a studio and I know all the "tricks" to get a good, big sound.
